In 2002, Zigong lantern festival is designated as one of the two folk activities in China by the National Tourism Administration, ranked the first of the 40 folk essences throughout the country. "Chinese Folk Arts Tour in 2002" and Zigong city were named as "Folk Art Township of Chinese Colorful Lantern" by the Ministry of Culture
In 2004, Zigong colorful lantern festival was designated as "The Chinese People's Lives Tour in 2004", a folk activity by the National Tourism Administration.
In 2004, Chinese Lantern Cultural Development Park was named the "National Cultural Industry Demonstration Base" by the Ministry of Culture.

In December 2010, in the first Annual Meeting of China's Exhibition Industry and Beijing International Convention and Exhibition Industry Summit Forum co-organized by International Trade and Economic Cooperation Institute of Ministry of Commerce, China Expo Seminar, Beijing Promotion Association of International Trade and Beijing Changping District People’s Government, Zigong lantern festival was awarded “2010 Top Ten Brand Activity Award”.

With the development and changes of society, in particular, since reform and opening up, Zigong lantern festival has been nourished by the national cultures, become increasingly exquisite and elegant and won the reputation with its eminent and graceful display both home and abroad.
In 1988, Zigong lantern festival was invited to enter Beijing, and “Beihai Park Dragon Lantern Show” was held in Beijing and became the focus of attention of Beijing people. On the 12th day of the lantern show, special audience, Comrade Deng Xiaoping watched the festival accompanied by Yang Shangkun, Deng Yingchao, Song Ping and 114 other leaders of the CCPC and State. They gave a high appraisal to the lantern festival.
It was the first step only for Zigong lantern festival to stride over the Sichuan Basin; going out of the country became the first leap of Zigong lantern festival. On September 20, 1990, invited by Jurong Environmental Engineering Co. in the Republic of Singapore, home-famed Zigong lantern festival went abroad the first time with the approval of Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China and held the “China Zigong Lantern Festival” in the Republic of Singapore. At that night, Wee Kim Wee, then President of the Republic of Singapore and his wife hosted the lighting ceremony. Singapore Jurong Town Administration and the officials from International Bureau presented a silk banner on which written “The First Lantern Show in the World”. Since then, the reputation of the first lantern festival has been spread over the whole world.
Nowadays, Zigong lantern show was held in more than 40 countries on every continent except Africa and every provincial capitals and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan in China up to over 500 cities. The accumulated audience reached up to 300 million persons/times and has a huge impact both home and abroad. The Presidents of Singapore and South Korea, Canadian Prime Minister, Crown Prince of Thailand and his wife and other international dignitaries spoke highly of Zigong lantern show. Thus, Zigong lantern festival has won the "high flavor art" and "flowing tourism resource", "the best light in the world", "national culture pride" and many other good reputations. A famous cultural brand of international influence has been formed and become the bridge and window for opening up, foreign communication and international cooperation of Zigong.
